The A does have an input for an external reference, and a internal ovenized reference is an option. Mine doesn't have one tho. Then if you have a good shop frequency standard, it can be used to sub out for a less-then-standard internal oscillator or an oscillator that's dead. If I ever decide that my HP L counter is just not worth repairing, I will pull the oscillator and build a power supply for it and use it as a shop standard.
