Is three times really the charm? While the previous generation servers were well protected by their box and foam, it was difficult to remove the Server from the box.
Other than the sticker on the front, the case and styling remains unchanged from the previous generation. The top and sides retain their elegant high-glass black finish, while the mesh metal front door conceals the excellent hard drive removable tray system the MediaSmart Server has been known for.
Even the lights are the same light blue color. Really, why mess with what looks good and works great? There are two significant differences between the EX and EX, speed and storage space. The first is speed. The EX, however, takes a full step in architecture by shipping with a dual core Pentium E at 2.
As of this writing, some desktop PCs sold at retail ship with similar specs. To round out the internals, the EX and EX are stocked with updated motherboards. Most importantly, those looking to outfit their servers with massive amounts of storage will be excitied to hear this new motherboard brings back support for eSATA Port Multipliers, a feature that disappeared in the move from generation one to generation two. This time around, it appears you can connect up to five drives instead of four.
Keeping cool and quiet is important in a home server, particularly when they start packing in more powerful processors. So, HP has outfitted the new line with a brand new cooling system. Their new control system can more accurately control the speed of the fans, and the new custom fans do seem to be a bit quieter than the previous generation. As expected, HP continues to offer the base model and deluxe models at different storage sizes. However, HP has ditched the two hard drive approach in the deluxe mode and instead opted for a single, larger drive.

Click Next , when the download is complete. The Install Wizard opens and gives you the rest of the installation instructions. Set up Additional Computers After installing the software on the Software Installation Disc, there are a few setup options for you to consider.
The computer is automatically set up to be backed up each night. If you want to customize back up settings for this computer, see Computer Backups. If you created individual user accounts in Windows Home Server for one or more network members that use this computer, you also need to set up computer user accounts for them if you want them to be able to access features on the server without logging on. If there are photos, music, or videos on this computer that you want collected on the server, set up media collection for this computer.
The entire computer is backed up by default. Complete the following steps to customize the hard drive volumes to back up, or to exclude folders from the backup. At the computer, double-click the Windows Home Server icon in the system tray. Follow the instructions in the Backup Configuration Wizard. On General Settings, move available computers to enabled for collection. When enabled, Media Collector automatically scans the enabled for collection computers for media. Media Collector does not scan computers in the available computers box.
Move a computer out of the enabled for collection box and into available computers if you want to disable media collection for that computer. The server and the client computers must be running the same version of the HP MediaSmart Server software.
In this article Update the Server. To automatically check for updates If you selected Automatically download and install updates when you configured HP Update, then you do not need to take further action. The server will install updates in the background as they are available. To manually check for updates note: If you have never restarted your HP MediaSmart Server, you may need to turn it off and back on before you check for updates. At the computer, double-click the Windows Home Server icon in the system tray and log on.
If an update is found it will be listed as below. Click Next to start the install process and follow default choices to complete the software install. Figure : Check for Updates Results. To manually install an update copied to the server If you downloaded a software update from the www. Once the update is on the server, complete the following steps. Click the Check for updates link. After the install wizard checks for pending updates on your server, you will see the select package page where you can select the Search button.

Click Finish to start the install process and follow the default choices to complete the server software install. Click Rollback and then click Yes in the confirmation screen. Software firewalls installed on your computer can block this communication and prevent the computer from locating the HP MediaSmart Server on your network.
After the HP MediaSmart Server software is installed, the firewall should prompt you to allow the installed programs to communicate with the server.
Allow the following HP MediaSmart Server programs to communicate through your firewall or anti-virus program:. Instructions for manually updating several common firewall and anti-virus programs are listed below. If your firewall or anti-virus program is not listed, please contact the vendor to find out how to manually add programs to the trusted programs list.
Additionally, see the documentation that came with your firewall or anti-virus program for the latest information. Click the vendor to view the instructions on updating their trusted programs list. Double-click the Firewall button to configure the Firewall. See Updating and Rolling Back the Server f for more information. Checking the Mac Client Version Number It is important for the Server software and the Mac client software to be on the same version in order for them to work together properly.
The Mac client version number is displayed in the About dialog. To check the server software version number go to a PC and double-click the Windows Home Server icon in the system tray and log on.
